Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and lived much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. You can get the Either/Or pattern from Lee’s web site or Ravelry and you can read more about what makes these patterns so great on her blog. Steven Paul Smith (Aug October 21, 2003), known professionally as Elliott Smith, was an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Admittedly, I am late to this party, but better late than never … I am definitely going to make a pair this month, and I have the perfect yarn … to be revealed later! So I was really excited today when I saw that knitwear designer Lee Meredith’s REMIX collection contained Elliott Smith creative! What’s going on here, I wondered … Smith’s album Either/Or was the inspiration for a fingerless mitts pattern, available in different versions and two wrist design variations (some you can see below). Of course I didn’t charge enough for time/materials, knowing what to charge is always a struggle, as much now as it was then – even as a seasoned crafter. My grandmother taught me to knit/purl (I think with some support from my mom) and once I mastered those stitches, I ran a little business making Cabbage Patch Kid sweaters and booties for my classmates. This control-freak nature may have caused problems in a band dynamic, but worked perfectly in the realm of Either/Or’s sessions. Really do love me some Elliott …Īnd I’m sure you know I love knitting, otherwise why would you be here and why would I have this blog? I started knitting when I was about nine years old. Elliott Smith had long yearned of being a solely a solo artist, with Neil Gust of Heatmiser recalling Smith often saying that the band made him sound different than he wanted his songs to sound. For those who don’t know, I love Elliott Smith – I even worked on a documentary film about his music called Heaven Adores You, directed by Nickolas Rossi. I love it when artifacts from my worlds collide – in this case music and crafts, specifically Elliott Smith and knitting.
